What
is NUMSA?
NUMSA is
the largest metalworkers union [and second largest trade union] in South Africa
with close to 232 000 members. It is an active affiliate of the
Congress of South African Trade Unions [COSATU], the biggest trade union
federation in South Africa.
NUMSA
is a national union with 59 offices situated around South Africa. It
has 9 regional offices with almost 300 officials. The Head Office is
in Johannesburg.
NUMSA
celebrated its 10th anniversary in 1997.
Who
can join NUMSA?
We are open to workers in:
the engineering sector – if you manufacture steel or if you make things from steel like car components, aluminium cans, bolts, nuts, burglar bars etc.
the motor sector – if you work in a garage as a mechanic, or a petrol attendant, or if you sell cars, or parts for motor cars.
the auto/tyre sector – if you assemble cars and make tyres.
The electronics sector – if you assemble TV’s telephones and make the cables for telephones and computers.
Hourly paid and monthly paid workers can join.
What
benefits does NUMSA give?
NUMSA will
defend and advance workers’ rights and will represent them in disciplinary
hearings and defend against unfair dismissal.
It also
fights to improve wages and working conditions.
Once
members start paying subscriptions they will automatically get funeral benefits
for themselves, their spouse and children.
Workers in
the Motor Sector enjoy access to the Autoworkers’ Medical Aid Fund.
How
much do members pay?
Members
pay 1% of basic wage per week or per month, as the case may be.
NUMSA’s
Funeral Fund
Every
NUMSA member belongs to the NUMSA Funeral Fund. The Fund pays the
family out cash if the member dies.
It also
pays if the spouse or children [up to the age of 21] die.
What
does it pay?
It pays the following amounts in cash when each of these people die.

| Child 6-13 | R1,000 |
| Child 0-5 | R 750 |
How
much does a member pay to belong?
60c from your subscriptions per week goes to the Numsa Funeral Fund.
